Mimeapps.list not writable  Topic is solved

Tue Jul 20, 2010 7:00 pm
Hi, I'm having this problem everytime I try to change Default Applications or Just edit a description for a launcher..

Configuration file "/home/*******/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list" not writable.
Please contact your system administrator.

I wonder if is a bug or something I did wrong, How can I fix it? ..

By the way I'm using Kubuntu 10.04 with KDE 4.5 RC 2.

Thanks :)

Code: Select all
chmod u+w /home/*******/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list

in a konsole-window should do it.

you could rename the file then logout and then back in and see if that helps - it should be replaced by the default

Nope It did not work, I also try deleting the file but it did not make a new one and when I rename it and reboot the same renamed list was there no new one, However I try by making me the owner of the list with "sudo dolphin" and it looks like is working, it updates the configuration files without any message, is fixed apparently, but was it a bug that didn't give the right permission to the list?

What rights and ownership does the files in that directory have? Or the mime-files at least.
Could you paste the output of this command:

Code: Select all
ls ~/.local/share/applications/mime* -l

No wonder you're having problems. Only root has write-access to the file. I have no idea of how that might have happened, but it's definitely the wrong owner of the file (not to mention the odd group).

This should fix it:

Code: Select all
sudo chown user:user /home/*******/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list

Replace user with your own username of course (two times because Kubuntu uses private groups).

I'm having the same problem. I've followed all the same steps, my problem being I don't appear to have a mimeapps.list files.

Code: Select all
$ sudo chmod u+w /home/******/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list
chmod: cannot access `/home/******/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list': No such file or directory

Code: Select all
$ sudo chown user:user /home/******/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list
chown: cannot access `/home/*****/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list': No such file or directory

What can I do about it? Thanks!!!

Please check the permissions of all directories prior.
The following should be owned by your user and have "rwx" permissions for your user.

Code: Select all
~/.local/share/applications/
~/.local/share/
~/.local/
~/
