Seems like you found a bug. It would be nice if you could report it to http://bugs.kde.org if it hasn't been reported already (I can confirm it here on 4.5.3, also Arch from [extra] repo).

Is it possible to have "Search and Run" activity on the Dashboard? I prefer to have more or less classic desktop normally, but I very like "Search and Run" and would like to fire it up on a keystroke.

Just to note that in 4.5, the name and icon for the activity can only be changed via the activity manager. Those are no longer in the configuration dialogue for desktop.
