Hi, so in KDE 4.4.4 in the lower left, next to the Chameleon, there are three stock icons sorta like Windows quick launch menu. They include Show the plasma desktop (still not sure what that is), Filezilla and Dolphin. It seems as if you cannot modify these items? I'd like to have different icons here. Is there a way to do that? Thanks!

"Show the plasma desktop" - minimizes all windows so you only see the desktop
they're probably application icons, you can remove them if you wish by right clicking
If you want a quick launch then you you need to add a quick launch widget
