I am running KDE3.5 on Suse. Suddenly it has started behaving weirdly.
Focus doesn't shift automatically when I open a new application. If I open a Gvim from command prompt,Gvim opens and stays behind the terminal window. I have to click on the minimized vim on the taskbar to focus on it. The case is same with other applications too. |

What is your focus prevention level (it's somewhere in KControl, probably in Window Behavior)? Try to lower it and see if it works.
This assumes that you use KWin, the default KDE window manager.
