Hi, Is there a way to reinstall fonts without affecting the rest of KDE? I understand that KDE has little or nothing to do with systemwide fonts settings. I just know for certain that I messed up my fonts using KDE System Settings -> Fonts. On the other hand, neither /.kde4 nor ~/.kde4 contains any font-related config (?). Nevertheless, my root and user font settings are different and not quite manageable, especially root. Any link or suggestion about KDE font configuration/reinstallation is welcome. |

Font configuration is usually stored in ~/.fonts.conf, with any added fonts being placed in ~/.fonts/ A cache of font information is stored in ~/.fontconfig/, which you should try removing first.

I just killed everything in question. Nevertheless, after relogin the system remains totally unimpressed. There has to be something else.

If you create a new user does it work there?

In a new user it looks a bitt different, but still not right. It's been expected, because in all probability my problem is with some systemwide settings. My fonts look especially wrong when in root mode. |

Ok, it is probable that /etc/fonts.conf or a similar file has been modified. I would suggest asking your distributor how to regenerate a default version of this configuration file.

is the Arch way . Unfortunately, makes no difference. Are there any KDE (or Qt) specific configs? |

KDE/Qt do not store system wide configurations usually as far as I am aware. After repairing fontconfig, does it still occur under a new user?

No, nothing changes no matter what I do. I delete everything in /etc/fonts along with /var/cache/fontconfig, regenerate it back with
to no effect. I use Liberation Sans set explicitly in KDE System Settings->Application Appearance->Fonts for most everything, and it remembers. Where? |

Those settings are per user, and stored in ~/.fonts.conf

Once more carefully deleted /etc/fonts and /var/cache/fontconfig, then ~/.fonts.conf
Reboot. Everything is back in place. That is, nothing changed. Besides, ~/.fonts.conf does not mention Liberation Sans or any other font. |

Unfortunately I don't know what your problem is. Perhaps it could be a lack of fonts, you may need to install extra packages.

Unfortunately, I'm at sea too. All I know that I have broken something playing with KDE System Settings->Application Appearance->Fonts. I turned off antialiasing; it turned on again on its own, but something cracked. I never deleted any fonts. The only clue left is that I can't kill or in any way damage my current font settings. That is, there are some configs not yet purged. |

I managed it at last by killing /usr/share/fonts . Installed a bare minimum (terminus-font, ttf-droid, ttf-liberation). It isn't perfect, but much better, no rendering artifacts with Firefox. BTW, what are "default" KDE fonts? Serif, Sans Serif, Monospace? Where are they configured? Or is it just "General" font? |
