Hello,

I am using the smb kio to explore some remote drive on a vpn, and it works only with the right workgroup value in /etc/samba/smb.conf, which is installed with the server package. As I dont need the server, this file is absent. However, I can set user and paswd in systemsettings/share, but no workgroup.

Then, since dolphin doesnt manage to connect, there is a prompt for an alternative username and passwd, but the workgroup still cannot be set there. It seems the smb kio has no other way than reading this system file to set the Workgroup value.

I am doing something wrong? Is there a way for a regular user to set a custom 'WORKGROUP' value ? I tried to add a workgroup entry in .kde4/share/config/kioslaverc but it doesnt work.

I am using Arch btw

Thanks

Unless there is some environment variable, or per user configuration file that Samba itself uses, you are likely out of luck in having to edit the local Samba server file in order to set the workgroup you want to use.

KDE likely does not have this setting because setting a seperate workgroup was not needed at the time of implementation (or the author/developer did not think of it). Because KDE uses Samba libraries to access Samba shares, KDE will follow Samba shares in respect to this.

Mm too bad..

I found a trick though, one's can overwrite the workgroup value in smb.conf by using the syntax "WORKGROUP/user" instead of just "user" in systemsettings. This seems to be samba native syntax. smb.conf is not even needed!

That may be of some use for someone else!

As the solution seems to work, I have marked this as solved so it is more visible to future searchers.
