Need an FTP Client

Wed Jul 04, 2012 6:42 am
I know Dolphin can handle ftp and fish but I like having an actual FTP Client if I need to transfer a lot of file from a server to my desktop or vice versa. I tried KFTGrabber but felt it was buggy. Filezilla is a very popular option but I never cared much for the UI. Plus it is GTK based rather then QT. I was hopping to stick with a QT based client but am open to GTK based clients as well.

Being new to linux I usually try to avoid compile from source when possible, but thanks for the extra tips as I was hopping the other thread would have presented more suggestions espically KDE/Qt based ones as I really dislike the Filezilla GUI and SmartFTP doesn't seem to run in WINE. If I found a Qt based alternative with a GUI similar to SmartFTP I would gladly compile from source if needed :p Sadly I don;t think that will happen as I have nto seen any FTP client replicate it's GUI. Here is a screen shot of SmartFTP for those unfamiliar: http://i.imgur.com/IZmjY.png

Have you tried splitting the Dolphin interface into two?

I have, and I use that on a daily basis to transfer stuff from my desktop to my NAS, and that works flawless! I love Dolphin, but I do web development from time to time. Say I need to start a phpbb forum, if you have dealt with any forum software you know it easily contains 100s if not 1000s of php and misc other scripts. It is occasions like this where I want to be able to have a true dedicated, fully dedicated, GUI.

Xplorer4x4: if you are not afraid of command-line, then I recommend you to use lftp (it starts with small letter L). It can connect to multiple hosts at once and has perfect mirror command that... well, mirrors one directory on other (it works both ways: local → remote and remote → local). This command is very similar to rsync. lftp is pretty advanced ftp client with ability to run commands in background and invoke local commands.

Also, you may create new activity where you put two (or more) "Folder view" widgets for your projects - one for local and one for remote. When you will need to put your files online, you will just drag them from one widget and drop on another. One web developer I know uses that setup.

I have tried some clients (filezilla and one from qt-apps) and the best is konqueror. The advantages are the multiple views and that you can have the files view in the file manager. I have my remoted places in the sidebar and i can say that you can have the better experience.
