I want to share files in a local network. I am using Kubuntu Precise and have samba installed. Via the context-menu in dolphin I have allowed a folder to be shared. Unfortunately that share does not show up on another computer in the network which is also running Kubuntu Precise.
The smb:/ kioslave in Dolphin does not show anything on bot Using network:/ shows the both computers which I have in the network, but only on the computer where I have set the share. It does not appear on the other computer. Does anyone have an idea how to diagnose the problem and/or fix this? Markum

Can you please check the firewall on the computer performing the sharing?
Also, have you tried doing "smb://ip_address_of_sharing_computer/" on the client computer?

I am not sure about the firewall. Iptables and ufw-packages are installed, but I have never touched them and honestly don't know how. "smb://ip_address_of_sharing_computer/" works, but it would be nice to solve this completely since after I get this working between two KDE Linux installations I need to get this running on a Mac and a Windows machine too.

Please run the following command to check the firewall:

Are both "nmbd" and "smbd" running on your system?

Hm. Can Windows systems see the system performing the sharing, and are they in the same network (including ip-range)?

There is only one Windows system. The Windows system can not see the Linux system and visa versa. They are in the same network. E.g. Both computers can successfully print jobs to the same network printer.

Can you post your conf file (/etc/samba/smb.conf)?

Here they are. As far as I can see they are (and should be) identicial. I have not changed anything.
Now the other (with the shared folder) system

I don't see any shared folders there. I suggest you start with a very simplistic smb.conf such as this with three shared folders:
For more info on samba I can recommend https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Samba

I will try this. But may be Dolphin stores shared folders somewhere else? Or does it mean there is a Dolphin bug?

For folders shared using the KDE dialog, these are accomplished through the "net user" mechanism, which is not visible in the configuration file I believe.
Are the two computers in the same workgroup?

I am not sure what you mean with workgroup. I know this can be set somewhere in Windows. But I have never seen a workgroup setting in KDE. They are in the same network.
