[Solved] kopete account how to?

Tue Oct 02, 2012 8:20 pm
I tried to get kopete to work but did it wrong, cause is not having a jabber account I guess.
I tried to use my gmail address (don't have google talk, which I see mentioned everywhere) but since it doesn't work I want to delete the name me@gmail.com that I inserted in kopete default identity.
I can't edit nore delete it though.
I found on facebook that I can use the facebook account for kopete connection, but how do I erase the wrong address and put in my facebook settings?

EDIT: :< oops, found how to delete the account finally and got hooked via facebook.
Sorry for waisting anyone's time :(
2nd EDIT: the facebook connection turns out to be not ideal; I have over 1.000 "friends" there, so opening kopete turns cpu up in the sky and I don't have the time to start sifting out +900 people to remove.
So if anyone can help me how to connect to regular gmail (not googletalk) I'd appreciate it.

In terms of the settings needed to connect - there is no difference between gmail.com and googlemail.com addresses.
What error message(s) do you get when you try to make it work?

It's not a matter of errors - it's not knowing what to fill in in eg "Jabber ID".
'Register new account" asks which Jabber server I want - the menu is empty though :(

EDIT: I found usefull info here:
http://userbase.kde.org/Kopete/Jabber/Create_your_Jabber_account
but "Jabber service -choose" results in "could not retrieve server list. So I'm still stuck with no Jabber account.

For Jabber ID simply put in your full GMail address.

Apparently not, because when I enter that and then my password for my gmail account, it says it's incorrect.
I double checked for capitals and num lock.

Hmm, it worked fine for me.
Make sure the following settings are in use:
- Use protocol encryption should be enabled.
- Allow plain-text password authentication should be enabled.
- Override default server information, with "talk.google.com" and port 5223.

All the settings you mention are ticked, but still I get the message that I'm not connected.
I tried with "talk.google.com" as well as with "gmail.com"

Unusual, not sure what the problem is then. It could possibly be a bug in your version of Kopete, or another differing system library.

What still puzzles me also is that all mention I see googling "googletalk" is that it is available only for Windows, not Linux.

I think this might be the problem:
August 22, 2012: Recently, the jabber.org IM service has been subject to massive denial of service attacks related to abusive use of jabber.org accounts by "customers" of KBot, a program for cheating at the DarkOrbit game. Therefore, we have temporarily disabled new account registration at jabber.org to avoid further attacks. We will enable new account registration again once we have dealt with the underlying problem, and will announce further changes through our usual methods. Until then, you can create an account at any other public XMPP service. We apologize for any inconvenience.
(from https://register.jabber.org/)
Looks like I'm out of luck for now.

found it: it was google that wanted to see a password created for double identification.
A problem I had in another OS before too, with Pidgin.
At least there was a notification there what the problem was. Anyway, I'm glad it's solved 8)
