Networking: ssh, windows, konqueror

Sat Oct 06, 2012 11:08 pm
I assume this is the right forum for this question. Give me a minute as I outline the background behind my question:

I'm running a mixed computer environment with a few /Linux boxes, some Windows 7 boxes, a Vista system, some Android devices, and unfortunately a Windows 8 test box.

As you probably all aware, file sharing and networking is a B.F.P.I.T.A. ... and especially since one of the vendors involved is well... network hostile.

I've kind of gotten around the sharing issue with a hodgepodge of Samba/CIFS shares, DNLA shares, and more recently Gdrive shares... which is great for Windows to Windows or Windows to Android... but well. GDrive on /Linux is still MIA... and well... that's not really an option if the ISP decides to shut down for the night.

Anyways, so as I was fighting about with the network, I stumbled across a solution probably a lot of you are familiar with, and are probably snickering about because it's so dead simple.

Fish.

Yeah. I've been doing this KDE thing since... 2002... and I never knew about the Fish command in Konqueror till around 35 minutes ago.

So... well... this has actually made my Linux to Linux file transfers dead simple. I've just got the Fish address(s) saved as a bookmark...

so... what I'm wondering now is... I know that the KDE developers have been working on bringing KDE applications to Microsoft's operating systems.

Can anyone tell me if it possible to configure Konqueror or ReKonq on Windows ... to leverage SSH and give me the same simple IP-address based file-sharing I have under /Linux?

Have you tried sftp'ing ino your linux boxes from windows? fish (file-over-ssh) works if you have sshd (ssh daemon) running on your boxes. Usually, your sshd configuration (/etc/ssh/sshd_config) also starts up an sftp server (secure ftp). So, connecting from a windows box to your linux box might be as simple as opening explorer and typing in sftp://<linux-box>. You may be able to refer to your computers directly by hostname or, by their ip address.

Fish support is included in KDE Runtime (much like the native SFTP support - which also uses SSH) so should be available in Konqueror / Dolphin to allow connecting to Linux based systems. 3rd party Windows native tools are also available to mount SFTP folders as well from what I recall.

OpenSSH on linux should include support for SFTP by default.

Do note that Linux systems are also capable of running Samba, which can be accessed using smb:// under KDE. For Android, applications are also available which allow the browsing of FTP/SFTP servers.

Bcooksley: I'm using one of those third party tools now (WinSCP) to access my /Linux boxes with SSH now. Thanks for letting me know the support was in the run-time.

karthikp: the sftp://(ip address) only worked in the past with a third-party ftp client installed. I took WinSCP out and Explorer once again faulted over on the link in a Windows 7 box.

I just prefer Konqueorer for this task since well... it looks and acts like a filemanager rather than an FTP client. Additionally, usage of Konqueror (Or Dolphin for that matter) makes behavior more consistent for my non-tech oriented users to just sit down at a computer and get to the files they want.

Okay, installed KDE 4.8.0 on a Windows 7 system. I checked through the list of packages in the KDE installer and didn't see anything related to ssh. I went ahead and grabbed everything the network packages just to make sure.

Tried the fish://(username)@(ip addres) link on both. This was the result:

Dolphin says Invalid Protocol

Konqueror says improperly formatted URL.

Not... really sure where to go from here.

Can you try fish:/ip-address, instead of fish://ip-address. The single slash is generally used by kioslaves, so that may be what dolphin is complaining about.

For "invalid protocol" that could mean the support was somehow not included... Could you please run a search over where you installed KDE and see if anything has "fish" in it's name?
