Telstra 4G Mobile Broadband USB

Fri Oct 19, 2012 6:25 am
I have managed to create a connection with much help from Google, however after each logout or reboot I must run sudo modprobe usbserial before Kubuntu (12.10) sees this connection in network manager.
Is there any way to set this up so that the 'Mobile Broadband' option appears in Network Manager when the USB is plugged in after a reboot?
I added an entry in /etc/modules which a posting said would achieve this but it seems it only works if I disconnect and remove/reinsert.
TIA

I solved this by adding the following to /etc/rc.local,
Code: Select all
modprobe usbserial vendor=0x19d2 product=0x0257

Is it right to assume that because the driver in use for this device is shown as 'generic' then the kernel doesn't yet have a specific driver for this device?

You may also want to create a UDev rule which will cause the usbserial module to be loaded when this device is connected.

You will need to change the USB Vendor and Product ID codes however.
It is semi-correct to make that assumption - what is more likely is that the kernel is not aware that the usbserial driver is capable of handling that device.

I have the following in a file, 19d2:0257 in /etc/usb_modeswitch.d,
Code: Select all
# Telstra ZTE LTE 4g modem
#
DefaultVendor=  0x19d2
DefaultProduct= 0x0257

TargetVendor=  0x19d2
TargetProduct= 0x0257

MessageContent="55534243123456782400000080000685000000240000000000000000000000"

CheckSuccess=20

Everything seems to work, offers 'Mobile Broadband' in N.M when connected including after reboot. Is the link you provided a simpler or more efficient setup?

If usbmodeswitch does the trick, then there is likely no difference between the two.

I might try the udevd method anyway to see if it will eliminate some of the device detection time.
