Is there such a thing? If not, what's current and up to date, what do people use?

The only thing I can really find is Kamoso, which can take pictures and record video via a webcam. It may be a little buggy, though.

I would use the search in:
- your distro's package manager - kde-look.org - kde-apps.org |

So KDE doesn't have a native one. Kamoso is about the best option, but as pointed out, it's buggy (thanks for the suggestion tho). Kamerka doesn't work either, nice idea though. And I'm not using gnome apps.....I can't be that bothered. So FAIL all round.

I never had any luck with it in the past it always recognised the cam and that was it, no picture. Just used it now on the off-chance and changed the video format in preferences and I get a picture, unlike past attempts. Seems stable atm, I'll suck this one and see, hopefully it stays this way. Take the 'accepted answer' check mark back and give it your good self. I'm sure it'll work for the majority who read this in the future.
