Hi folks,
I installed KDE ontop of mint maya specificially so as to easily and fully install and run kile for latex document creation. However, I didn't think ahead to enquire as to whether I could connect to internet via my hwawei usb wireless modem stick.... I can't! Has anyone found a fix for this that a newb like me could use? thx in advance, tex |

Can you please provide more information concerning this "Huawei wireless" stick?
Is it for 3G / Mobile Broadband, or is it for 802.11 (normal wifi) networks?

thanks for such a speedy reply: it is definitely for 3G (i've just confirmed that by telephone with the server who provided the usb) |

Do you get a Optical Device appearing when you connect the device? If you do, access it and then "eject" the disc through Dolphin.
Once you do this, the Optical Device will probably disappear, and a networking one will appear in Network Management. From there, you should be able to add a connection for your provider and connect.

Dolphin being the "device manager"? located in the accessories? system network? Sorry to be so pesky, it is just that I have to swing over from this session to another desktop and I want to be sure i've got your very welcome instructions clear. |

Dolphin is the file manager, and should open when you attempt to access the Optical Drive from the Device Notifier.
The Device Notifier applet should popup when you connect any storage drive, or in this case, when you connect your 3G Modem.

You know, I think I can live with this: if I start a session in gnome, with connexion, then logout and login to kde session, i'm still online! But to return to the problem: i looked for dolphin and all i could see was: Akonadi Server Configuration and I haven't yet been successful at configuring it. However, the reason i got kde in the first place - so i could run kile more smoothly than it seems to run in gnome - has been amply rewarded! I'm having a math writing session for the first time in weeks because i seem to "get" the logic of kile better than than that of texmaker (actually, i think it is due to great "cheats" like a better auto-complete function) Cheers, tex |

Unusual - Dolphin has nothing to do with Akonadi. I can find Dolphin in Applications > System > File Manager (Dolphin).
Have you tried initiating a connection from the Network Management applet in KDE? It should offer virtually the same options as GNOME does.

I'm not sure we are talking about the same desktop. Mine is Plasma, KDE version 4.8.5 I can't even find a file manager on the desktop! (found it: Plasma Desktop Manager) Can i send you a screen shot of my desktop? (I couldn't access the "print screen" key, as I can do in gnome, so i couldn't get a screenshot) |

Can you please check in your package manager that "dolphin" and "ksnapshot" are installed?
Also make sure that "plasmoid-networkmanagement" is installed as well (or something similar to that, it may be called plasma-applet-networkmanagement for instance). For screenshots - you need to upload those to an external image host (such as Imageshack, Imagebin, etc) and then paste the link here.
