Up untill I scrambled it, Network Manager 0.9.0.1 on KDE4.2.25 has been running great (few bugs, not bad) on my Laptop Toshiba Satellite P205.
I tried to set up an openvpn for my Synology Diskstation DS212j using their instructions for linux (they seemed outdated), this did not work so I tried https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenVPN. In the process Network Manager stopped running. It is compeletly blank and says <NewtorkManager is not running. Please restart it.>
In the configure-KDE Control Module I get the VPN tab and Wired tab. The VPN tab gives me the options import and Add. When I try to import openvpn I get the error <The name org.freedesdtop.NetworkManager was not provided by any .service files> The wired tab gives no options.
I would like to report the problems in the right sequence with the various commands I tried (lots) but I have been in a working frenzy trying everything I find that might fix the problem that I sort of lost track of what was going on . At one point it completely worked again and I was relieved but when I rebooted...same problem and I have been unable to duplicate the proper command for it to work again.

NetworkManager probably crashed, you must restarting when this problem happen. Plasma NM 0.9.0.1 is more than a year old, you should upgrade to a newer version (preferably 0.9.0.9, which I released last week). I guess your NetworkManager version is also very old and upgrading may solve the (likely) crash problem in NetworkManager as well.

Thankyou, I just assumed that by keeping up with the updates Network Manager would have updated itself. I downloaded those updates you reccommended but my attempt to install them failed. Obviously this isn't my strong point so specifically, what command should I enter to install them?

It depends on which distribution you use. Where did you download the updates from? You should use your distribution's update program to upgrade your system.

To try to install these I right clicked on the files after unpacking them and selected open Terminal here and ran <apt-get install> in both cases I got:

When I was connected to the internet my update program was Update Manager mintUpdate 4.4.7 This works great when I can connect, since I can't I've tried dragging and dropping the files into the Update Manager, but it won't let me.

There is something wrong in the link you downloaded the packages from. That is a Fedora repository and for the arm platform, are you using an arm processor?! I think you should stick with the packages that your distribution provides and not try to compile them yourself, that is the easiest way of using NetworkManager. If you plan to test bleeding edge feature then compiling packages is an good option.

I tried to find a download that would update my Network Manager from where I downloaded my distribution but I couldn't find anything. Since I needed to update my KDE anyways, I just started over with UBUNTU and plan to partition with Arch....have fun with that for a while. I have learned to keep up with updates and do a little bit more research/stay in contact with the community better. After a bit of research I found that starting an openvpn is a bit tricky in KDE, maybe it wouldn't have been with this recent update. I have appreciated the assistance.
