Hello All,
I wanted to create a wifi access point for my google nexus 7 which could share my ethernet internet connection, so I started to create a new wireless network from the network manager. While selecting the network type I could see there were 3 modes for it: 1. Infrastructure 2. Ad-hoc and 3. AP Mode. So I selected the ap-mode type and saved the network with security as WPA. But I can't see the ap-mode network in my nexus 7 and also my laptop doesn't connect to it. Also when I reopen the the network for edit, the setting is changed to infrastructure. I am unable to understand why it is so...and looking for help on this. Also if possible please suggest some other software which might be usefull for creating the access point. Thank you -Ravi |

It did that probably because your card does not support ap-mode. Try ad-hoc instead, which is supposed to be supported by a bigger number of cards. However, ad-hoc is badly supported by wifi card's firmware, then it does not always properly work.

thanks for your reply lamarque ...
The problem is that if I make a network in "ad hoc" mode then my android device can not discover this wifi network and hence I must create it in AP mode. Also I found that if I use software such as "Connectify" then my card does create an "ap mode" wifi..and my device also works with it. I fail understand why in kubuntu my wifi doesn't support the ap mode and in windows it does. Meanwhile I found a package called "hostapd" which can create an "ad hoc" mode wifi but I don't understand why my device is not able to obtain the IP address from hostapd wifi. I am still searching for a solution..and hoping that I find something good... |

Is there any difference between the output of "iwconfig" as produced in the NetworkManager setup, and the "Connectify" setup?
(iwconfig is a CLI utility)

Finally I fixed the problem by purging the hostapd and netmasq server and then reinstalling them both.
Thank you all |

Hello, Ap-mode doesn't work without hostapd and dnsmasq, and it fails without telling why.
Please add a error message/info message to ask user to install these 2 packages. |

Issues such as that should be reported to your distribution - their dependencies are wrong.
You could also consider filing a bug on KDE's Bugzilla as well, requesting that more information be given when it fails to setup a shared connection such as this one.
