I'm currently thinking about using a USB wifi device because it has better range. Unfortunately when I plug it in I can't disable the built in wifi receiver through Kubuntu 13.04. I'm currently running a HP g7-1070us. I tried to look in Network Preferences but I couldn't find out how to disable the built in adapter. The keyboard shortcut to do so on my laptop also doesn't work in Kubuntu for whatever reason. I only want to do this because when I try to connect to any network they both try to connect simultaneously for whatever reason.

While I do not see an option to disable a specific wireless interface through KDE Network Management, you can specify that given wireless connections will only be made using a particular adapter - which should solve the double connection issue at the very least.
You could also try blacklisting the kernel modules which your internal wireless card uses, which would make it appear to the system as if the card no longer existed. Please consult your distribution about how to do this.
