How to create a bridge connection?

Sat Dec 07, 2013 7:35 am
I'm trying to make a bridged network connection from my wireless card to my ethernet port (allowing a device plugged into my computer via ethernet to connect through my wireless connection). I see there's an option to add a bridged connection in the new network connections editor (kdeplasma-applets-plasma-nm 0.9.3.2-1) but it doesn't seem too straightforward and I can't find any documentation for it. Can anyone explain how to set up what I'm trying to set up? Thanks a lot.

I haven't worked with the bridged network connection type before, but I have used the shared connection type.
Once the shared connection profile has been setup, simply activating it (after connecting to the wireless network as normal) is usually enough to allow device(s) connected over ethernet to access the internet / the local network.

How do I set it up? That's what I can seem to figure out or find any documentation for.

From "Manage Connections" create a new Wired connection - selecting the type "Shared".
Simply give this a name and accept all the other settings already specified.

Then from the Network Management applet, select your newly created Wired connection - which will cause it to become "Connected" indicating that your network connection is now shared. Your system will remain connected to the wireless network, and will pass along any traffic it receives from wired clients.

If you need to connect multiple systems to your computer, I would suggest using a switch - the Shared connection can support multiple computers.
