accessing my Seagate NAS

Sun Apr 19, 2015 10:32 pm
:-\

I have just started using Mint17.1 KDE version. As my laptop hard drive was rather noisy, I replaced it and installed Mint KDE onto the new hard drive.

On my first install Dolphin accessed files on my NAS, under Network>Samba Shares. This time I get the error
Could not connect to host for smb://seagategroup/
.

I have searched for a solution, but cannot find anything I can actually understand!!

How can I get Dolphin to connect to my NAS? Should I copy a config file from my previous installation? Are there some settings I need to change?

thanks.....

Can you ping your station?

Also, have a look at smb4k, nice mounting tool for external stuff.

Please feel free to ask further questions for more info.

All the best!

???

Thanks, but how do I ping you my station? And what will this tell you? Sorry, not good at Linux terminology.

I am looking at smb4k. This is a 'compile-it-yourself' program. So, do I cd to the Downloads folder and proceed from there, this assumes that it will install itself in an appropriate place? Or do I have to create a folder somewhere for the installation to go into? As you see, anything beyond a GUI or a .deb package and I am feeling my way rather!

First things first. Which distro have you got?

And Mint does not have smb4k in the repos? Are you sure? Do an
Code: Select all
apt-cache search smb4k

just to make sure. If successful do a
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install smb4k

To find out your IP in your home network do a
Code: Select all
sudo ifconfig

This will list your network interfaces, MAC addresses, inet addr, etc. The latter is the important one.

Let's say your IP address is 192.168.178.68 for argument's sake. Now ping your router:
Code: Select all
ping 192.168.178.1

It should spurt stuff out. Abort with CTRL + C

Now find the IP of your NAS. You need nmap. Is it installed? Do a
Code: Select all
dpkg -l|grep nmap

If it says ii in front of the output, you're fine. If not install as with smb4k.

Then do a
Code: Select all
nmap -sP 192.168.178.1/24

to see who else is in your network. Your NAS should show up if turned on.

Now ping it as above.

All good?

Alternatively you can check your router for the NAS IP address but you'll learn a lot less :)

OK, done all that;

Identified IP of NAS - same as the one that appears when I access it via web interface. Nmap reports that the host is up. It pings ok - ie it returns readings in millseconds regularly?

Have installed smb4k (it was in software repository - I hadn't looked!!). This program says it automatically scans the network for active workgroups on startup and displays them in the Network Neighbourhood pane, but nothing is appearing there. I have done a network scan and searched for seagategroup - with no results.

Same result from Dolphin - Seagategroup icon appears via Samba shares, but reports could not connect to host for smb://seagategroup/

thanks for your communicaion over this

Lol, web interface, hey? Oh well...

Your settings in the seagate interface are the likely culprit. I suspect you have no users set up. Unfortunately I am not familiar with the interface.

You could also try smb://<IP of of your NAS>/<share name> in your Dolphin but I suspect it won't work...

More info on the interface perhaps? Or are there any other seagate NAS users out there?

I know, its not too slick, that's why I want to access it through my file explorer!! It is so frustrating as it all worked before, but this time............ >:(

I tried setting it up via smb4k by opening a mount dialogue, it asked for a UNC address - what is that and how can I find it?

Try the IP address of your NAS followed by the proper path. Dito for Dolphin. As in 192.168.178.123/home/username/video or some such.

Doh!! I tried out a Linux installation on an external hard drive, which had accessed my NAS previously - and this time it didn't. So I turned my NAS off, and back on again - and guess what - I could access it. Why didn't I think of that before!!

One thing that is a big problem with KDE however, is that Libre Office Open dialogue does not include my Network so I cannot load office files directly from my NAS. Other programs - GIMP, Scribus, Gwenview etc - do list my network in their Open dialogues. Also if I try to load an office file by double-clicking on a file stored on my NAS, Libre Office splash screen appears but the file fails to load.

So, perhaps its back to Cinnamon for me.......

@ toad

Hey Toad, may I thank you for your suggestions I had access trouble on my workstation (see http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... c0eda1f224) and after installing smb4k I can mount anything on the network! Also, I have image previews on network resources, and can play music from my NAS with Amarok, that wasn't possible before! Amazing tool which solves many headaches for me!! It definitely should be integrated in KDE! Thanks again!

Marcel.
