Hello there!

I just got my DELL precision M3800 Laptop with Ubuntu preinstalled. I then downloaded Kubuntu and made a second partition to have both.
Now my problem is, that connection to wired or wireless doesn't work, or just randomly.

Where Ubuntus Unity detects wired connection right when I login, KDE just shows me that wired connection is detected but not working.
When I try wireless connections (tried multiple wireless lans I have access to) KDE detects, but can only connect for a short time and randomly disconnects again.
While in Ubuntu/Unity there is no problem at all.

This is what I get for
Code: Select all
rfkill list all
for both distros:

Code: Select all
0: nfc0: NFC
   Soft blocked: no
   Hard blocked: no
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
   Soft blocked: no
   Hard blocked: no
2: hci0: Bluetooth
   Soft blocked: no
   Hard blocked: no

Any help is very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Your network issues aren't KDE related, your installation will operate on networkmanager just as the ubuntu installation does.
The problem is more likely that the pre-installed OS has some driver backports (in the kernel...) to support the used hardware, while the generic kubuntu install will lack them (maybe dell has added some ppa to the ubuntu sources?) - random disconnects could also relate to battery saving modprobe parameters for the kernel module (or online configuration, eg. by powertop)

=> You don't have to install a different operating system in order to use another desktop shell (or any software that's not installed by default)
Just install KDE in ubuntu and be done. You can select between unity or kde on the login screen then.

tl;dr:
just install KDE in the vendor supplied ubuntu installation - neither KDE nor unity really "do" network, they just provide access to configs etc.

Thank you a lot for the information!
I also thought that this is only the UI to access/display the config.

Thank you :)
