For some reason with KDE Neon I can't make VPN connections in the GUI. I use OpenVPN for my connections, and when I try to connect to Private Internet Access (not with their app) I get a notification saying "Starting the service providing the VPN connection failed". I installed openvpn and network-manager-openvpn. If I connect using one of their .ovpn files via command line it works just fine, but using the same .ovpn file via Networks in System Settings won't work.

edit: SOLVED. Just need to use that script (assuming network-manager-openvpn is already installed' https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/i ... /pia-nm.sh
I initially didn't use the script because they mentioned installing network-manager-openvpn-gnome, and I'm on KDE. But the script works just the same regardless. Have you found a solution ? I'm in the exact same position. I previously did what you mentioned, can connect through the commandline, but get the same error message you got. My VPN provider is also PIA. A reply would be appreciated. Thanks ! |

I've had nothing buy heartache and grief with trying to connect to OpenVPN using the Network Manager.
Did you import the working OpenVPN config file using the "Import VPN Connection" option within Network Manager? |

Facing the same issue as well. Have no idea how to try to debug this, or at least get a much more detailed error messages or whatever.

Never mind. I managed to debug this with:
No sudo. Check timestamps. Scroll down to the very bottom for the latest logs. My issue was:
It seems the OVPN file generated by PIA's generator wasn't fully compatible with Plasma Network Manager's (plasma-nm) import feature. I'm guessing it was a fault with plasma-nm's import feature than the OVPN file, cause using the config file directly with:
was working just fine. Anyway, I went to the imported config in plasma-nm, then headed to VPN (openvpn) tab -> Advanced... (at the bottom right corner). Afterwards to Security tab in the new window. There I noticed that Cipher was NOT even set, and HMAC Authentication was also set to Default instead. After changing both to match whichever config I desired from PIA's generator (e.i. AES-128-CBC and SHA-1), I could confirm that it would then connect properly. I also tried saving my PIA's login details directly in VPN (openvpn) tab, and it worked well.
