Unreliable Flash Video in Konqueror

Mon Nov 17, 2008 4:41 am
Operating System: Kubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex)
KDE 4.1.3
Flash Player 10.0 r12

I'm having a problem getting Flash videos to work reliably in Konqueror. Flash works normally on most web sites, but when I try to play Flash video there's a blank box where the video should be. I can right click on the blank box and the flash menu appears indicating that it did load flash, just not the video itself. If I refresh the page 3 or 4 times, the video will finally load normally.

I'm using the same flash plug-in for Firefox and it works perfectly. I've checked the adblock filter list, disabling it, and it doesn't have any effect. I've scanned for plug-ins in Konqueror's settings and the Flash player seems to be detected properly, as I said, normal Flash content works fine, just not Flash video.

Thank you for any help.

I see the same thing in pretty much all versions of Konqueror.
I have just chalked it up to flash in konq sucks.

Are you 32 or 64bit?
I just read that Adobe released a 64bit flash that might be worth a try if you are 64bit.
I am 32bit though and see it.

This would be KDE bug 169626, I believe.

I've tried that one, and unfortunately it doesn't help for this particular problem. The 64-bit plugin works great in Firefox though, and finally I could get rid of the damn nspluginwrapper (was a bit too prone to hog the cpu for my liking...)

Thanks for the responses. I wasn't aware of the bug report filed on it, it even describes the problem in almost exactly the same terminology I used. I didn't think to search the KDE bugs site and a web search didn't turn up anything useful so I thought it was something obscure with my own system.

I guess I'm fine with using Firefox for now. I was just trying to favor KDE applications over GTK applications which can have some display issues.

Thanks again.

I have the same problem in Konqueror 4.1.3 . Especially on Youtube, the area that should be occupied by a flash video tends to be white. However, right-clicking the white area shows that flash is loaded. I'm using the new alpha netscape-flash 64-bit plugin. On my laptop, Konqueror 3.5.9 loads flash videos fine on the first try. They also load correctly in Firefox 2.

I know this is a bit off-topic, but I'm also having problems with certain sites like www.zhongwen.com . In Konqueror 4.1.3, it won't load the side frames correctly; only the leftmost frame loads correctly. In Firefox and on my laptop (Konqueror 3.5.9), they work fine. This is probably the only problem that is causing me to continue using Firefox in KDE 4.

so, the viable solution for kubuntu 8.10 with kde 4.1.2 would be installing flash 9 ? With what package or manually?
