I have used Twinkle for a long time but a VoIP integration to KDE 4.4 would be very nice.

I'm very tense on it after this good news.

That's great - but wasn't this meant to be done within decibel? as far as i know decibel is not maintained at the moment .. what are the consequently of that? how do you find a new maintainer.. who coordinates the workprogress? is there any progress?

I gave SFLPhone a try today in my vm of Kubuntu 9.10 despite the fact that there was only a gnome compiled version of it. I found that it is one of the most capable SIP clients I've tried.. and I think I've tried most of them. I used it to connect to my IP-PBX at work. I was able initiate multiple calls at the same time. That's something unique to linux based sip phones. Hold worked, retrieve worked.. you got a list of all your connections.. I could not get the keypad to generate tones that could be understood by my IP-PBX for voicemail access. Either by using the mouse and the app or the numeric keypad.. that's unfortunate.. The package is available in a PPA for gnome but no KDE version in a .deb format as yet.. I haven't tried compiling it.

Twinkle is not bad, but there ahve been no significant advancements in its technology in recent years. I am also looking for a VOIP solution and this continues to be a problem in our business. Is decibel still available to users? I would be willing to give that a try.

We're hard at work getting Telepathy support integrated with KDE. When this is complete, Kopete and KDE will have full Voice and Video chat support (along with Text chat, file transfer support etc). At the moment, the code is mostly experimental, but it is progressing steadily.

If you're running KDE trunk and like compiling code and want to have a go, there's lots of Telepathy stuff to be found in the playground/network folder of KDE svn. If not, then look out for the first Telepathy enabled code being released from extragear some time during the KDE 4.4 lifetime. If you're a C++ coder and would like to help out, get in touch with me and I can help you get started :)

Sorry if I missed this somewhere else. I'm a bit of a returnee, I've been using a work computer with windows for the past few years. I'm back now though, just got my new machine, and I was wondering if Kopete supports that voice and video support now?

I'm still in the 'figure out what and how to configure' stage atm. ;D

As far as I know, not much has changed with regards to Kopete and Voice/Video unfortunately...

maybe you just have to wait a little bit longer and meanwhile use googles gmail video feature (it works great in firefox/linux and it's platform independent)

but see here:
http://dot.kde.org/sites/dot.kde.org/files/4.jpg

as you can see the telepathy-kde team is working hard to get their great new stuff out there and there is already a contact list app and a working chatwindow that supports adium themes.. they want to ship it with kde4.7

as far is i can tell from the frequent mailing list activity they will make it ! (at least a working preview for us to test)

sure.. but it's skype... the linux version is always behind... is always beta.. makes troubles with video audio etc... and last but not least it is skype ^^ proprietary, closed, encrypted stuff that has been removed from several networks because of security considerations..
