Hello all,
I want to make VoIP with KDE/Qt applications. It seems that KDE is a little behind Gnome in this aspect (it is _now_ possible to make audio calls with your Gtalk/XMPP contacts with empathy, a Gnome client that uses the telepathy specification) The most interesting KDE/QT applications that I found are: - Qutecom: SIP (audio/video) / XMPP/msn/yahoo... (text). PPA here: https://edge.launchpad.net/~cavedon/+archive - Kcall: Is is very interesting because was successfully ported to the KDE4 environment, incl. Decibel(telepathy)->XMPP audio / video For more information https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KubuntuVOIPSOlution ¿What are your experiences with VoIP in kde? Regards,

voip (and video) in a "skype-like" easy way seems hopeless sometimes... i know openwengo for a long time now and i did one or two successfull video calls with this software one year ago... (they disconnected after two minutes) ...
i tried qutecom today and it seems to work (i called "500@ekiga.net") but no video.. (my webcam works fine in other programs)... it needs further testing question: is it possible to make audio calls with your normal jabber contacts or do you need a gtalk account when using empathy? i don't care if its qt or gtk anymore.. i just want to use voip services.. (and no skype) and most of all - i would like to use jabber and nothing else... ekiga3 looks good but it isnt available for ubuntu as a usable package.. (i found one but it istn't really stable and even with uPnP it is sometimes hard to connect behind a NAT/Firewall ) jabbin (this psi fork) worked for me in a local area network.. no chance over a nat.. maybe we all shoud use Mumble or teamspeak.. (they both work great but again.. no video) there is one interesting software: its called "sip-communicator" and is getting better every day.. but.. it's java! http://www.sip-communicator.org/index.p ... nt/Roadmap then there is coccinella http://www.getdeb.net/app/Coccinella ...it claims to have jingle support (no video but talking over jabber sounds great) i just saw that there is a new version and i'll give it a try.. but.. it is no kde-app either...

Hi waldelf,
Sorry, I don't have any "normal" jabber users to test, only GTalk user. But It should work with normal jabber user because empathy implements the latest jingle specification. Also you can do SIP calls too. You can read this interesting interview to the main developer of empathy: http://gnomedesktop.org/node/4072 He talk about the actual and future empathy features. Also he speaks about future jingle features as multiconferencing!! (he is developer of empathy too) (http://telepathy.freedesktop.org/mingle/mingle.html) Hopefully, a IM client for KDE implement telepathy early to benefit from all this!

Decibel is an implementation of the Telepathy specification and some associated components.
However, I think it didn't make it in time for 4.2 Cheers, _

Yes, that is the idea but I think it didn't make it in time for 4.2 as anda_skoa said. Maybe 4.3 or 4.4
See Kopete roadmap here: http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/Kopete/Roadmap

well.. thats sad.. how is the development of kopete going on? reading "not done" all the way leaves the impression that there is a huge lack of developers.. does anyone know?
btw: i just tried "ekiga" for intrepid from this source:
and it works great!!

Yes, ekiga is a good software but depends on Gnome libraries.
You can also try qutecom (formerly known as Wengophone): there is a PPA here: https://edge.launchpad.net/~cavedon/+archive Has anyone tried KCall?

At least the Decibel porting is mainly a result of that project's delay. Kopete can't port to something which is not available yet nor stable even in its development branch. Cheers, _

i see.. thx anda_skoa
i tried qutecom ... its very nice.. (except the fact that it won't work with my webcam for some reason) i think it is one of the best skype alternatives i've seen.. and it's a multiprotocol messenger too...

I find Twinkle to handle everything I need. It is in the Ubuntu repositories, but I think it is an older version. The Twinkle website (http://www.xs4all.nl/~mfnboer/twinkle/index.html) says that 1.3.2 is out, but it looks like 1.2 in Intrepid. The only issue on KDE4 is that it is based on KDE 3.x, and if you enable the KAddressBook integration, then it will want to pull in the KDE 3.x versions of those applications and not the KDE4 versions. You will want to turn off the address book integration until there is a KDE4 version.

Hello troycarpenter,
Can Twinkle do video calls? Do you know if it is planned a KDE4 version?

If you look at the website, it appears that video and QT4 is on the roadmap...don't know if it's a long trip or a short trip.
