I am running Linux 2.6.27.19-3.2-pae i686 openSUSE 11.1 (i586) with KDE 4.1.3 release 4.9. In openSUSE 10.3 I had gspcav1 installed and my webcam performed very well - now with this new system gspcav1 will not run, however, when I fire up Kopete and select settings - video devices - There I am on screen. It recognizes the device correctly "WebCam Instant" (creative) and it sees input: as zc3xx and for standard it shows nothing. When I select "OK" or "apply" and close the settings window it appears the program captures the last video image at closing, so when I return to "settings" Video devices a frozen motionless image is on the screen? In openSUSE 10.3 the "input" was zc30.1 or something like that and "standard" listed PAL-? can't remember quite what. I am very confused what is driving the webcam? I have loaded Skype and it does not load the webcam? Just as an aside, the video is the best I've had - don't know if I can link video to others in a chat session (I use Yahoo)? The last time I tried to do this it said I needed Jasper? What is Jasper? I could ask a thousand more questions but this is enough for now. Can any one explain what is going on?

Jasper is an open source implementation of the JPEG-2000 standard, which covers video.
Not sure about the issues with gspca though. You may wish to try a version from the build service.

This is probably not a KDE related problem. Since the integration of the gspca drivers into the kernel sources the API has changed and you need to install a compability layer (libv4l) and wrapper scripts for some applications. Google for "gspca LD_PRELOAD" (for example this thread) for detailed of discussion and fixes for that problem.
