Can't connect wirelessly!

Fri Mar 27, 2009 10:29 pm
I just installed OpenSuse 11.1 with KDE 4.1.3 on a netbook. It's a dual boot with windows XP. In XP, the wireless card works perfectly, but in openSuse, it never connects. It can see the wireless networks available but it won't connect to my network!

I tried this to no avail: Wireless will not work when dual-boot with Windows XP&Vista | SUSE & openSUSE

I'm using:

Asus EEE 1002 HA
Wireless Card: Atheros AR928X Wireless Network Adapter
WPA2 (although when I switched the router to WPA, it still didn't work)

Firmware requests (no idea if it's relevant): firmware: requesting intel-ucode/06-1c-02

(I have no idea where to find that firmware file!)

My network is encrypted with WPA2 but when I run "/usr/sbin/iwconfig" it outputs:

wlan0
...elided...
Access Point: Not-Associated
...elided...
Encryption Key: off

However, I've tried:
1. Turning on broadcasting
2. Changing my password to have no symbols or numbers
3. Turning security off entirely
4. Trying diff. security methods
5. Using a static IP

None of the above resulted in getting it to work.

I also ran collectNWData.sh and I get diff. errors depending on what things I've tried but always these two:

CND0120E - Network card %1 has no IP address
CND0300E - No dhcp server found on interface %1

And I've gotten:

CND0380I: No WLANs detected on interface wlan0.
CND0330E: WLAN credential problems exist on interface wlan0
(Although the last one has gone away now for some reason)

I also tried this (altering wpa_supplicant.conf) but it didn't work so i undid it:

What could be going on? This works on the same computer in windows!

Try using YaST to configure connecting to your wireless network ( through the ifup method ). You could also install Wicd from a build service repository.

Thanks, I did try YaST and it didn't fix anything.

I'll look at wicd and maybe try that.

This is very unusual. In Wicd, make sure that the correct wireless device is set ( wlan0 ), and deactivate network manager by selecting the Classic ifup mode to manage the network in YaST.

It's killing me.

I did turn off the network manager but still no good.

Does it work if you try to connect to an unsecured access point?

My knetwork-manager on the other hand, it cannot detect available wireless networks. How do I make it works like in Kubuntu 8.10? Any other related packages I need to have?

I'm using Debian sid + experimental KDE 4.2.1

KNetworkManager is broken. If running "iwlist scan" as root shows networks, try installing wicd, disabling network manager and using that.

So can you actually see wireless networks?

Does running "iwlist scan" as root (as bcooksley said earlier) list any networks?

Yes, I can see the networks, but it's the connection that doesn't work.

I tried it with wicd - no luck!

I tried turning off authentication on the router - no luck!

What could be going on here?

Have you installed all updates? There have been quite a few Kernel updates since openSUSE 11.1 was released.

Yep. I chose that as an option during install and then did even more updates through the updater as well.
