Running KDE4.2.1 on Gentoo Linux... for some reason KDE is not aware of eth0. Looking at system-settings->network settings it just shows a blank window for interfaces.
The network monitoring plasmoids also never show anything. For instance the "system monitoring" plasmoid, in the "Hardware info" part just says "Network: Networking interface" and never shows traffic. I do have working wired network on eth0 which is configured at boot. So how do I make KDE see it?

This either means:
A) You do not use NetworkManager or Wicd ( with the kdereview backend ) as your Solid Network backend B) That ksysguardd is not able to retrieve the information from your system

I just figured out why ksysguardd doesn't list any network interface devices for me (also gentoo)
In ksysguardd/netdev.c If theres no /proc/net/wireless (no wireless kernel support), updateNetDev returns -1 which causes it not to process anymore and not add any network interface monitors After I added networking support -> wireless (even tho I have no wireless devices) to the kernel ksysguard worked as well as the system monitor - network , sys mon 'hardware info' is still the same. |

You need to ensure that HAL is available and functioning for your user, and that the Solid HAL backend is installed.

Thanks. I emerged networkmanager and enabled wireless support in the kernel. I now have eth0 in the ksysguard plasmoid. I still have no interfaces listed in System-Settings->Network, though. Any ideas why it's not showing there?
I have solid installed, but how do I verify HAL is using it? Can I find out what hardware HAL is seeing?

Here's the output from solid-hardware:
So it looks like solid knows about it. And the HAL list:

Hmmm odd... here's the console output when I launch systemsettings->network:
Yet no device shows up?

I cannot find any "Network" section relating to displaying individual devices in System Settings on my system. Do you mean "Network Management"?

From System Settings I select "Network Settings". In that window I have 2 icons to the left named "Service Discovery" and "Network Settings". I click "Network Settings". On the right the window changes to a series of tabs with the first tab named "Network Interfaces". It shows a popup that says "Detecting" something (it's only up for a second). The popup goes away but there is nothing listed in network interfaces.

It appears you are using "KNetworkConf" which is part of KDE Admin ( I don't build that module, therefore I don't have it )
Its port to Qt4 seems to be incomplete, so that may be the reason as to why it is not working.

Ok, I see. Is there another network conf app I should use with KDE4? It's not a big deal as I'm perfectly capably of configuring it manually, just curious.

You can use NetworkManager with "Network Management" or you could try Wicd, but you will have to use its Gtk ( not GNOME ) interface. There are probably others as well.

Thanks. I switched to wicd and as a bonus cut a few seconds off my boot time. I'll mark this as "Solved".

zwede,
Will you be so kind to elaborate your steps wrt kernel options (I haven't /proc/net/wireless) and wicd using. I use Gentoo also (~amd64). |
