Connecting Knetwork manager at boot?

Sun Jun 14, 2009 10:35 am
I used - for a short time until recently - Mepis, and when i booted, Knetwork manager was running and i was connected, but with KDE it is running and shows as connected, but in fact it is not... in order to access the 'net i have to select ->Options ->Switch to offline mode and then Options ->Switch to online mode in order to get online.

This has been the case for the last couple of years or so, with both native Kubuntu and kubuntu-desktop installed on Gnome.

Could someone tell me how to have the network connected at boot? - i tried telling Knetwork manager to do so via Configure interface but the settings refuse to stick. :(

Any and all advice will be highly appreciated. :)

p.s. It's a wired connection.

This is likely a manifestation of how buggy KNetworkManager is ( it can't even connect to a WPA-PSK network on my machine.... ) I would recommend using an alternative network manager ( such as Wicd ), or doing it the old way ( using ifup )

You could try the GNOME nm-applet if you wished to continue using NetworkManager...

Which repo will nm-applet be in, Adept and Synaptic can't find it....

Wicd does the same as Knetwork-manager... ifupdown is installed, is it command line ?

Try searching for "networkmanager" and look for applet or GNOME in the search results.
