What doesn't work?
The nm-applet application should work after removing the Network Management plasmoid and stopping the "Network Management" service in System Settings > Advanced > KDE Services ( Not YaST! )

You may need to close nm-applet and reopen it after performing this if you had previously opened it.

I have no network managment plasmoid installed, i have only the gnome network manager and its dependencies.

kde-networkmanager is not installed, as well as kde4-knetworkconf.
In the kde service manager the "Network status daemon" is deselected.
Nevertheless, even though being always deselected, it is always indicated as "running" everytime I restart.
If I stop it, and then run the command nm-applet the gnome applet will not load anyway and I will get the error message that I showed before.

the only way for me to start the gnome applet is to open the yast "network devices" control panel (where i have selected to use network manager and not ifup) and close the control panel.

when yast indicates that the network services are being restarted the gnome applet appears in my system tray.

I am afraid that I must have some configuration file somewhere which stops the thing from happening

Look for a KDE4 NetworkManagement plasmoid ( probably under kde4-plasma-* ) and uninstall it.

That KDE 4 service is not the service I was referring to, and does need to be enabled. It is not related.
Do you ensure that KNetworkManager is closed when trying to use nm-applet?

Do you have NetworkManager starting by default in YaST?

It shouldn't, given that KInternet & KNetworkManager are not installed.

Given the problems you are having with Network Manager, I would recommend installing Wicd, which can be installed from the openSUSE OBS.

Some progress! Although not sure whether this will land in 4.3.x or 4.4 :) See https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=174439

Due to the nature and requirements of KDE patch releases, this cannot be released as part of the KDE 4.3.x series. It could be included in 4.4 however.

thats true. im hoping the various distributions (i care about kubuntu/fedora) are not afraid to take the patches and apply them for kde 4.3.x by the time the next round of distro releases arrives about october/november :) or i guess we could grab the patches ourselves and try to build...
