Help with wireless

Mon Oct 26, 2009 2:40 pm
I was using wireless with the wl driver with KDE 4.3 with success until an update that jacked my wireless completely. I could not fix it so I installed Ubuntu Karmic and my wireless works out of the box. My card is a broadcom 4328. I'm just wondering if KDE has any documentation on how to get the wireless to work. I can't understand how I can connect using Gnome and not using KDE. I would like to use KDE but it seems the developers really don't consider wireless an important aspect of their desktop environment. There is little information on this subject anywhere.

Kubuntu likely ships KNetworkManager which is a pre-alpha at the best as it currently has not had any official release by its developer(s). If you close it, you can invoke the GNOME network utility ( nm-applet ) and use that under KDE. You could also switch to an alternative network manager ( such as Wicd which I personally use )

Thanks for the response. Sorry I did not get back but I actually decided to install Kubuntu 9.10 RC to see if they made any progress, and actually they did, but not completely. It actually recognizes my wireless after it installs the broadcom driver, but it won't activate as of yet. I'm still working on it. I may give your suggestion a try because ubuntu karmic does work out of the box but it is probably a dependency that is the difference. Right now it just keeps asking me to to put in my wep over and over.

Re: Help with wireless  Topic is solved

Guess what? After installing Kubuntu 9.10 RC the wireless works out of the box. All I had to do was update, add the broadcom driver supplied by the hardware drivers and input the wep. It looks like the folks at KDE and Kubuntu finally have a handle on it. Good job guys. I'm really happy cause I wanted so much to use this Operating System. Now it's good for several years. No more installs. No more Microsoft.
