I have Kubuntu 9.10 with KDE 4.3 installed and I am trying to setup a folder to be shared over the network. I right-click the folder, then go to Properties. Then, on the Share tab it says:
I click Configure File Sharing button. A prompt comes up for my password. I enter password and nothing happens. I then click Configure File Sharing button again and nothing happens. Any suggestions?

I system settings, do you have Advanced > Samba module? (that's what it should show up)
Do you have samba installed? If not, you should try searching in your distro's repositories.

It usually has to be allowed by root before you can use it, and it may be that kubuntu's sudo doesn't work for that. Do you have to give a root password for any of the configuration screens in systemsettings? That should be a guide as to whether this is the problem. I'd be inclined to try starting systemsettings from a root konsole, then see if you can set sharing up from there.

Doesn't work for me. I started System Settings and even Dolphin with root, but I still can't use the Share tab in Dolphin.
EDIT: I reinstalled kdenetwork-filesharing and it seems to work now ! |

I was having the exact same problem with kubuntu 9.10. I would click 'configure file sharing'. the button would gray for a second but ultimately do nothing. i had samba installed.
What fixed me up was this: sudo apt-get install kdenetwork-filesharing libsmbclient samba samba smbclient |
