I'm currently using Xandros which has the KDE desktop, mail, etc. I just found out that Xandros, except for notebooks, will no longer be offering desktop software. I've always had a problem with dialup being correctly supported, and Xandros did this flawlessly. I'm now trying to find a new distribution that uses KDE and also does not have all of the dialup support problems. Many people have suggested some of the popular distributions, ie Ubuntu, Fedora, etc. but they use GNOME. Does anyone out there still use dialup, and if so what distribution are you using to pickup an installed modem? I primarily use 3Com Couriers which are serial port. These should be easier. I also have some Winmodems that I know are Linux compatible - at least with Xandros. Any suggestions?

Serial port modems are usually full firmware ( aka. real modems ) so they should work without any issues for most distributions.

I have not found this to be true. I've tried a number of distributions and some have no dialup support at all. I'd like a recommendation from someone that has actually had success with this scenario.

I plug my serial modem into a router. When I dial out, I access the modem thru the router using a web browser. It's a few extra clicks, and it cost some money for the router and the modem, but guaranteed to work with any and all OS.
