Konqueror samba login

Mon May 03, 2010 6:26 pm
Hi

A few days ago I installed KDE 4.4 (Kubuntu 10.04) after using Gnome for a few years. And i must say it looks *very* good, it even makes my vivid memories of KDE 3 seem pale!

Now the (small) problem:
I have a Linux server running Samba so that everyone (guest) can read but you need to supply user and password to gain write access. When I'm trying to access the server using

"smb://user@server/share/"

in Konqueror or Dolphin I'm not asked for password and I'm silently logged in as guest.
I can use

"smb://user:password@server/share/"

to gain write access but then the password is displayed for all to see and it's also stored in the Konqueror's history.

Is this a bug/missing feature or is there a better way to do this in KDE4.4?

Regard

If you only need to access one Samba system, or have the same credentials on the other systems, you can set the credentials to automatically use in System Settings > Sharing.

Thanks for your answer, but it is several different servers. I guess I'll keep Kubuntu but use Nautilus for Samba access.

Can you please file a bug at bugs.kde.org regarding this?

Yes, I set the pare user-psw in System Settings > Sharing.
But how I can access it in other apps?
Actually I need:
- Use it in cups to access samba printer
- In mount.cifs to mount samba shares

The password is stored using a cipher in ~/.kde*/config and isn't usable by CUPS or mount.cifs as far as I know ( and they run as a different user, root ). They will need to be configured seperately.

KDE applications running as your user, using the smb:// protocol will have seamless access to these credentials however.

And storing credentials in root KDE session will not help, as I understand
