Staying logged in to a samba share

Mon Jul 12, 2010 4:08 pm
Hi, I'm new to KDE4, having used KDE2.x in the early days of desktop Linux and then switched to GNOME in between. Please don't hate me for that. I like the new interface but the problem is samba shares. My university network depends on being logged in to a samba share for authentication, without this I can't get any internet access. The problem appears to be that KDE logs out of the samba share after it's been idle for a while so my internet keeps going off. How do I make sure that once logged in to the share I remain logged in permanently?

One thing you could try is creating a folderview that points to your samba share. I think you'll find that the share recognises that it is active, and so will not disconnect.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately this does not work. It appears that unless I am actively browsing the samba share I am logged off after about 5 minutes.

I think you should speak to the University's tech support team. It may be something in their settings, or they may be able to give you a clue why it's happening.

Alternately, you could mount the share into the system, which should keep the connection open.

Bcooksley, good idea... I'll look up how to do that.
