Jabber's usage as a single protocol is great. However Kopete's use of XMPP/jabber accounts is limited by a series of usability stumbling blocks:
Hurdle 1 However, for the majority of lay computer users, when they open Kopete and try and add an account (such as Googletalk, Hyves Kwekker, Facebook chat) they do not know or realise that these use the Jabber service. Remedy: A series of more common XMPP services should have their own account type. Less common services could be listed in the XMPP account type to alert prospective users to set them up via XMPP. Hurdle 2 If they do get past the first hurdle of realising they need to set-up a jabber/XMPP account, then they also are confused by a plethora of settings which do not concern them. Remedy: Having a separate account type for each key XMPP-based service enables Kopete to automatically select the correct configuration, and to give tips next to the configuration dialogue to help the user enter the correct information (such as the format of the username, where to find it etc...) Hurdle 3 If the user manages to get their account set-up and the right details entered then they start to use Kopete. If they have several XMPP accounts set up it becomes very confusing - they all bear the same icon and the username shown next to the icon may sometimes be the same for several services and in any case is not instantly recognisable! Remedy: Each common XMPP service should have its own, appropriate, icon. Where a generic XMPP service is established, the user should be able to select an icon for that specific service. Do others agree? If so, are any Kopete developers around who wish to comment on this? I am happy to help with design, account details, and usability issues, but have scant coding expertise. |

I agree 100%. Separate facebook, gtalk, etc. icons are sooo needed. Colorful lightbulbs do not suffice.
