As Kopete is yet to support Google Talk voice, is there any other IM that we can use on KDE for Google Talk voice support?
I am looking for a tool which is KDE based. |

The telepathy framework supports it: http://telepathy.freedesktop.org/wiki/P ... %20Support
Empathy currently will be usable (It's using gnome libs, but at least it works) and more importantly KTelepathy will support it, though don't expect a stable release for another year. It is being worked on. There was a demo telepathy-KDE chat program, but I think it's abandonware, and I can't remember the name. |

Thanks David for the help.
I will try to install Empathy then. Actually the last time I tried with Empathy on KDE/Kubuntu (about a year or so back), I was having some issues with the voice working well. I will try it again. |

If by voice chat you mean audio calls, that works just fine here.
On Kubuntu you'd need KDE 4.5 with kopete-gcall installed.

Yes I mean audio calls, that's what I use at times. I am on latest KDE (4.5.1) and on 10.10 beta. I checked that I do have kopete-gcall installed but I need to know how should I use it? I checked my google contacts and none of them are showing any Mic or something like that which we usually see in Empathy. Can you please help me with few more steps to get this running? If I can make audio calls using Kopete, that would be the best for me. Thanks for dropping in and helping. |

I just checked Kopete and found a new tab "Google Talk" for the Google account I am using.
There is an option called "Enable Google Talk libjingle support". I thought I should make it ON and I clicked the checkbox. When I clicked Ok button I got the message "Google Talk libjingle support is only for GTalk/Gmail account, which connect to server talk.google.com." Now I tried to override default server connection and change the server settings from default "gmail.com" to "talk.google.com" and saved . I made no changes to port which is as default. Tried to save the settings. But Kopete crashed. I am sure I did something wrong in doing the settings but is this how we setup an Google ID for Audio talk? |

Well, except for the crashing part that is how it is supposed to work.
Were you actually able to connect to Google Talk by using gmail.com? If so then we need to fix that check in Kopete, earlier it only worked with talk.google.com...

I have SSL on and "override ..." choice as OFF and I can find my GMail buddies on Kopete correctly. That means I think the default server gmail.com is working. I also chatted with few buddies earlier with this setting. BTW, I have multiple Google ID setup like that in Kopete. |

Google Talk voice support is working for me on Kopete.
I reinstalled Kubuntu 10.10 beta from ppa and now I can make calls to my gooangle talk contacts. The voice clarity is awsome. I think this is a new feature which will probably get introduced when 10.10 is released finally. I am not sure whether my post will be read by the concerned developers or not, but I want to convey my sincere thanks to all the developers who made this possible. Actually I had to try other options because I missed this feature on my Kopete earlier. Thanks again. |

Here are the steps that worked for me : a) In Kopete setup your Google Talk account via Jabber protocol. (Assuming that you already have a Google account). That means Kopete > Configure > Accounts > Add Account > Jabber. b) Enter your full ID in the Jabber ID field. So if it is exampleid@google.com, please enter that in the Jabber ID field. Enter the Password. c) Then go to the connection tab. - Use Protocol encryption (SSL) is checked in my case. - Allow plain-text password authentication also checked in my case. - Override default server authentication is checked and the server is "talk.google.com". I think this option you have to check so that you can change the default server address. - Then go to Google Talk option. This will be available if you are using the latest version probably. - Check the "Enable google talk libjingle (GTalk/Gmail) option. - Click Ok. Then if you have some buddies online in your Google account, please right click on the contact - then you will find a pop up with your buddies name and email as the last option in the list. It will be something like "My Buddy <mybuddy@gmail.com>" (This is just an example ID). Select the last option and there you can see "Call Google Talk contact". Please note that as per I know we can only make voice calls to google contacts. In case you see your option as dimmed - I think the reason might be the person can not be called due to some reason. I am using Kubuntu Beta OS with KDE 4.5.1. So I am not sure whether these steps will also work for you or not. Hope it works for you too. |
