KDE and the network

Sun Nov 07, 2010 3:02 pm
I am fairly new to KDE although I have had some success with Gnome. My problem with KDE is that I have been unable to get any network connection. Apparently some of the help files require internet access therefore I cannot even get help from that source. I understand that Knetworkmanager controls access to the network. That would be great but I can't find it. I need help.

Do you have a system tray icon that looks like an empty ethernet socket? That should be the networkmanager, where you can configure your network connection.

Although it doesn't say so I think that I have found the network manager, however it doesn't solve the problem. When I clicked the little red button the tray it tells me that the WLAN interface is not connected. I then went to "manage connections". A window pops up entitled "Configure KDE Control Module". When "Network Connections" and "Wireless" are clicked marespond (my wireless connection name) shows up indicating that it was never used. That looks fine to me. I then click "apply" and then "OK". The window disappears however the initial window still indicates that WLAN is not connected. I again tried to bring up "Konquorer". It still indicates that there is an unknown host error and it further tells me that "the requested operation could not be completed". It seems that I have gained very little.

When you open the "Little red button" there should be a list beside the wireless interface, called "Connections". Is your wireless network listed there? If so, click it.

This time the little red button was not there but instead a small black circle on the right hand side of the tray. When I depressed that button the "connections" window appear. A wireless connection called "rotifer" appeared (not mine) but my wireless connection (marespond) did not appear.

Is your wireless connection hidden?

How can I tell if my wireless is hidden? I did not hide it. I don't even know how.

When adding a connection, press "scan" to look for networks, and if your network does not appear, then you need to check your router settings.
