Creating launcher for Firefox 4.0

Fri Feb 25, 2011 4:37 am
Hi all,
I'm new to Kubuntu and I'm trying to install Firefox 4.0 tar.bz2 & create a launcher by following an ubuntu tutorial based on ubuntu. (last time I do that)
Tutorial here... [urlhttp://surferzworld.com/2010/01/installing-firefox-thunderbird-ubuntu//url]

I've went to the folder it's currently in & right clicked > create new > link to application & typed in the commands they give on the website, clicked>advanced< and put a tick beside "show in system tray" but I can't find the launcher.

I was able to start firefox by going to terminal & typing in firefox and it did open, but I got these errors...

Code: Select all
kubuntu-dave@kubuntu-dave-SR5350F:~$ firefox
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/skypebuttons.so [/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/skypebuttons.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64]
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/lib/amd64/IcedTeaPlugin.so [/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/lib/amd64/IcedTeaPlugin.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64]
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /var/lib/flashplugin-installer/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so [/var/lib/flashplugin-installer/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64]

Update:
I just figured out I can go to the menu and type in firefox & it comes up with "run firefox" without the firefox icon & that works, so I guess I can just add it to fav's, but how do I get the firefox icon?
Also, if anyone has any tips about how I could have made this easier, or what I may have done wrong, please...do tell. :P

Thank you

Edit: Sorry, looks like I put this in the wrong area.

you used a Gnome tutorial to create a launcher for the Gnome menu, not for the KDE launcher which might not work quite as expected. This is a pdf to explain the kde launcher http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cac ... clHQ&pli=1 when you created the launcher did you also select the FireFox icon?

As for the errors, it looks like your installation and the version of FF aren't in sync - one is 64bit and the other 32bit (guessing 64 bit os and 32bit FF)

You can right click on the application launcher, click menu editor, go to the directory you want firefox in, click "new item", set it up, close the menu editor, open the menu, grab the firefox item, and the drag it to your panel.

Thank you both for your help.

It wouldn't let me right click the icon. It did nothing at all.

Yes, it is a 32 bit version of Firefox, it's Firefox 4.0 beta, thought I would try it. I think I used the wrong OS to try it with though, as I have Ubuntu & Linux Mint as well, and am more experienced with both.
(insert face palm here)

I'm just going to remove it and install the version of Firefox that came with Kubuntu.
Still a good lesson learned. :)

Thanks again!
