getting krdc to work

Thu Mar 03, 2011 11:14 pm
i'm trying to vnc into a server set up by my professor, but i'm having some trouble. i grabbed the ip address by pinging the machine. then i paste it into the textbox, add a display number (trying different ones), and then hit 'enter'.

all i get is a blue screen, no username/password dialog. then after a few minutes, i get a popup saying that the server cannot be found.

have i missed something here on my end or is the problem on the other end?

thanks.

If it does nothing, it's because probably the machine that you're trying to access has no VNC server to accept the connection.

If it's a Windows machine, you need to use the RDP protocol, but first you need to allow remote connections on the windows machine.

i was told that vnc was set up on the machine, and i was given login credentials to use. i figured the issue is on my end.

by the way, the machine i'm trying to get to is a mac.

i tried connecting on windows and using various programs (e.g., tightvnc, realvnc, ultravnc), and rather than a 'server not found' error, i get an authentication error.

Is VNC running on the default port?

Let's suppose that it's port 5900.

What happens if you open a Konsole window and execute the command:

telnet remote_machine_address 5900

Does it say connection refused or the screen clears and the telnet windows seems to be doing nothing? Press some keys to see if you get an answer.

If it's the first case, then it's a network problem, otherwise, maybe is a Krdc problem, but I use Krdc a lot and it works fine.

i'm not sure what port it's using. i'm assuming it's the default one.

i tried the command and got:

Code: Select all
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection timed out.

The machine in question, given that port 5900 isn't accessible, likely has setup issues. I'd suggest contacting the person responsible for the machine, it is likely a firewall issue.
