One of the really nifty features of Konqueror (file manager) in KDE3 was it's ability to easily rip cd's. Using the audiocd:// kioslave, I could access a music cd directly in Konqi and it would create meta directories for mp3. ogg, etc. From there, all I had to do was enter whichever directory and then "drag and drop" my songs to another location and it would rip it. Is there equivalent functionality in KDE4 using Dolphin?

Dolphin can use KIO slaves, and i can confirm that the audiocd slave still exists ( i have it ). I find it easier to use Konqueror however in KDE4 ( even as a file manager ) and it definitely finds the audiocd KIO slave.

Excellent. Is the audiocd slave built into KDE4, or is it separate? If separate, do you know where I can get it?

i think it is separate but i could be wrong. you could look for a package with your package manager if it is separate.

In openSuSE it is a seperate package.

I've found soundkonverter to be a good standalone ripper for KDE, although it's freedb lookups seem to be hit-or-miss. Sometimes it can't find CD information that other CD players find easily.

I use k3b (KDE3 version) for this. cddb works perfectly and it takes just a few clicks to start ripping...

I think the audiocd KIO slave is part of the kdemultimedia module.

Can you anybody tell me how do I use audiocd:/ to rip mp3s? I entered it in dolphin and now what? I see folders CDA, FLAC, MP3...and wavs..
Update: You just need to drag folder to some other place and it starts to copy. It also supports cddb, that is nice, configure it by: System Settings -> Advanced -> CDDB Retrieval I had problems with ripping into mp3. After ripping I just heard white noise with any player I tried. I need to test it more, there are some related settings in System Settings -> Advanced -> Audio CDs It uses Lame for encoding into mp3 probably, but it is not clear from GUI libaudiocd_encoder_lame.so was the hint.

I believe the Audio Encoder settings can be set from System Settings > Advanced > Audio CD
