VPN connection problem!

Thu Jun 23, 2011 5:32 am
Hi
I'm using PPTP vpn connection to connect to office from home.
But I've a problem with kde4.

In ubuntu I make a pptp connection in network manager and everythings is fine.
But in kubuntu I make a pptp connection in Network Manager, It connects successfully and everythings is fine.
But after 15 sec ~ 2 min it disconnects.

First I think its KDE problem, but I don't have this problem in Fedora KDE or Opensuse.
What is the problem with it?

Can you please examine the NetworkManager logs? Their location is somewhere under /var/log/ but varies depending on the distribution unfortunately.

I'm having a problem getting PPTP to work also. I'm not certain where the issue exists. I'm using Fedora 15 with KDE.

I am able to log in with my Window's 7 laptop with no problems. But, from Fedora, with the same VPN configuration, I can't get connected.

I have reviewed my iptables settings, and my Astaro firewall appliance, and I don't see anything wrong. (The Windows 7 laptop is going through the Astaro Firewall also.)

The logs for my attempts are in /var/log/messages:

Thanks,

The following messages indicate why it is failing:
Code: Select all
Jul 6 21:07:30 jdlinux pppd[30554]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Jul 6 21:07:30 jdlinux pppd[30554]: Connection terminated.

I would suggest verifying that the configuration is complete with all needed details, and that they are accurate.

The details are the same that they are for the configuration in Windows 7.

The VPN gateway is correct. The username/password/domain is correct. I have tried a variety of different combinations of in the Authentication dialog:
But, the main choices are:
MSCHAPv2 checked
Use MPPE Encryption checked
Crypto: Any
Use Stateful encryption: checked (tried unchecked, no difference)
All compression options are on. I've tried with different compressions options disabled; same results.
Send PPP echo packets is off.

Under IPv4 Authentication:
Basic Settings:
Automatic (VPN)
No DHCP Client ID
IPv4 is required for this connection is checked
Additional addresses: none
Routes: none
Ignore automatically obtained routes: unchecked
Use only for resources on this connection: checked
IPv4 is required: checked

Basically, the setup is the same as it is configured on the Windows7 box.

I've used a multitude of VPN PPTP clients with Fedora for over 7 years. I've never had this kind of trouble getting connected to the company VPN.

Is this GUI interface working for anybody?

If you try using the GNOME nm-applet, does it work? If it doesn't - the breakage is in NetworkManager itself. If it works - then KDE Network Manager is at fault - likely due to not being developed alongside NetworkManager itself (which nm-applet is).

In the case of it working with nm-applet, please file a bug at bugs.kde.org so the developers can rectify it.

Re: VPN connection problem!

I've been trying to get the pptp vpn connection to work from my Fedora 15 laptop for 3 weeks now. I've eliminated a number of possible issues, and here's where I'm at now:
1. I have a virtualized XP pro installed on both my laptop, and my workstation.
2. The workstation is running Fedora 15 x_64 with 2 nics.
3. The laptop is running Fedora 15 x_64 with wifi connectivity.
4. The virtual xp instances with bridged networking will connect to the vpn with no problem from either device. (This eliminate errors related to my Astaro firewall appliance.)
5. I've captured with tcpdump the connection session from my laptop where it fails, and from the xp session when it succeeds.
6. Below is the output from both with the URLs modified for security reasons (Failed session first):

Fedora 15 Session:

Re: VPN connection problem!

I should have mentioned in the post above that I get the same failures from my desktop with the wired connection that I get from the laptop with the wireless. And, that the virtual xp with bridged networking connects on the desktop with no problems also.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Additionally, the sessions fail on both computers when using Gnome as well...

This is probably a bug in the NetworkManager PPTP client in this case, especially if GNOME fails as well.

Not much you can do other than examine the Network Manager log (usually somewhere under /var/log) to see what it is falling over in doing.

Hi All,

It's taken a long time, but, after the updates that I installed from the main fedora repositories yesterday, the pptp connection is now working. This includes using the GUI KDE network manager. So, I'm a happy camper.
