Bluetooth Tethering On KDE 4.7

Fri Aug 05, 2011 10:01 pm
The KDE 4.7 announcment states that bluetooth tethering is now available:
The Plasma Workspaces now also offer much improved network management, including experimental support for NetworkManager 0.9 as well as Bluetooth tethering, 3G, VPN, MAC spoofing and other advanced networking options.
However, I don't see any options for Bluetooth tethering in the bluedevil or network manager applets. So, could someone explain how to do bluetooth tethering in KDE 4.7.

I am running OpenSUSE 11.4, KDE 4.7, plasmoid-networkmanagment 0.9.svn1192577-7.2 and bluedevil 1.0.2-3.8.1.

Thanks,

Gordon

maybe using NetworkManager (and the plasmoid) rpms from the Playground repo may help http://download.opensuse.org/repositori ... SUSE_11.4/
4.7 KDE repo: NetworkManager-kde4-libs-0.9.1git20110722
4.7 KDE Playground repo: NetworkManager-kde4-libs-0.9.2.65git.1312473004-39.1.x86_64.rpm

also peruse http://lamarque-lvs.blogspot.com/2011/0 ... ering.html and it's comments section

Hey google01103,

Thanks for the prompt reply! I have already tried the plasmoid_networkmanager both from Unstable:Playground and Distro:Factory with no success. I am new to KDE/OpenSUSE having migraded from Gnome2/Ubuntu about 4 weeks ago and so it is quite possible that I am doing something wrong. However, one would think that bluetooth tethering would be straight forward since it was included prominently in the KDE 4.7 announcement.

I was already familiar with Lamarque's blog since I have been googling this quite a bit. I think that I will post my question as a comment to his blog to see if he can help me. Otherwise, if anybody else has any suggestions on how to get bluetooth tethering working then please let me know.

Thanks,

Gordon

Have you looked at the steps taken in http://www.afiestas.org/bluedevil-1-2-s ... -and-panu/ ?

Hi bcooksley,

Yes, I have seen Afiestas Blog but it really doesn't help. It is not totally clear to me which version of NM that I need to be running. Lamarque says that I must be running bluedevil 1.2 or that I must set the bluetooth connection up manually which I have tried to do numerous times without success. I am in a dialog with Lamarque here:

http://lamarque-lvs.blogspot.com/2011/0 ... ering.html

Hopefully, I will be able to get it working with Lamarque's help. Nevertheless, if anybody else has gotten bluetooth tethering to work then please let me know how you did it.

Thanks,

Gordon
