Konqueror 4.7 bookmarks toolbar not displayed (or empty?)

Hello,

I use Konqueror 4.7.0 (KHTML rendering engine) and, despite having
Configuration/Toolbars display/Bookmarks toolbar
checkbox checked, the bookmarks toolbar is not shown or the bookmarks toolbar is empty.

I have searched the KDE bugs database and do not see any bug related to such symptom or situation.

I have the konq-plugins package installed but, even after removing it, I can not have the Bookmarks toolbar displayed anyway.

When I do a right-click on a toolbar, and then click the "Configure toolbars" text, the Bookmarks toolbar is not even listed in the combobox (drop-down list to select a toolbar).

When I do a right-click on a toolbar, and then unlock the position of toolbars, then I notice the Bookmarks toolbar is empty or very small.

I am open to any suggestions or anything I have not tried yet. Can you help me?

KDE Platform Version: 4.7.0
Konqueror version: 4.7.0 (KHTML rendering engine)
Qt Version: 4.7.2
Operating System: Linux 2.6.38-10-generic-pae i686 (32bits)
Distribution: Kubuntu 11.04
here.

regards, Gérard Talbot

can you create and then login as a new user to see if that user has the same problem

alternatively you can rename/move/delete the ~/.kde/share/apps/konqueror folder and ~/.kde/share/config/konq* files when konqueror is closed

Hello google01103,

Thank you for your quick reply.

I created and then login-ed as a new user and that user did not have that same problem. I am puzzled as to what I may have done which would create, which would trigger such symptom.

I really wish I could fix such problem; it is annoying.

Do you have an idea or a suggestion for me to continue?

regards, Gérard

obviously something is corrupted

as the Konq files are either ~/.kde/share/config/konq* or ~/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/* moving/renaming/deleting them should fix your problem

if you didn't want to loose all your setup and bookmarks you could work your way individually thru the files renaming them one by one and restarting Konq - I'd guess starting with ~/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/profiles/* or ~/.kde/share/config/konquerorrc

google01103,

I deleted ~/.kde/share/config/konq* or ~/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/* while Konqueror was closed and then reopened it. The Bookmark toolbar does not display anything visible; it seems empty.

This is what I tried first and it did not work.

I do not know what is wrong here.

I do choose a bookmarks folder to be assigned as toolbar bookmarks. Then I try to display it with

Configuration/Toolbars display/Bookmarks toolbar

I even save the configuration under the "Web browsing" view profile.

I do not know what to do now. Other ideas?

Using Bookmarks
Chapter 6. Using Bookmarks

To select which bookmark subfolder is used to hold the Bookmark Toolbar items select the subfolder then choose Set as Toolbar Folder from the Folder menu.

taken from Using Bookmarks, Chapter 6. Using Bookmarks

I will try again everything later this weekend.

I've tried everything again and I can not make this bookmarks toolbar display the bookmarks. But when I try with a new user account, the bookmarks are displayed in the bookmarks toolbar.

I do not know what to do here.

Quoted below are the results after executing
kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental

kbuildsycoca4 running...
Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-gerard" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.
kbuildsycoca4(1659) KConfigGroup::readXdgListEntry: List entry Categories in "/usr/share/applications/im-switch.desktop" is not compliant with XDG standard (missing trailing semicolon).
kbuildsycoca4(1659) parseLayoutNode: The menu spec file contains a Layout or DefaultLayout tag without the mandatory Merge tag inside. Please fix your file.
kbuildsycoca4(1659) parseLayoutNode: The menu spec file contains a Layout or DefaultLayout tag without the mandatory Merge tag inside. Please fix your file.

google01103: what should/can I do now to fix those files? If possible, I would prefer to create/open a bug report on this..

have you been sudo'ing instead of kdesudo'ing to run gui apps as root?

try logging out and in the virtual terminal remove /var/tmp/kdecache-gerard and /tmp/kde-gerard or login as root and remove the directories if easier (you can try doing this as command line root in your session but doing it outside will probably be better)

<sigh> I am still a beginner with Linux and KDE. To my knowledge, I have never kdesudo-ed before; I have no idea what kdesudo is supposed to do or suppose to mean actually.

huh... not sure what you're saying. Huh.. can I do this in Dolphin? Can I remove /var/tmp/kdecache-gerard and /tmp/kde-gerard from within Dolphin? Or must I do this from within Konsole? If I have to remove /var/tmp/kdecache-gerard and /tmp/kde-gerard after login-in as root, then can you guide the beginner that I am?

By using ls -a (list all) and pwd (print working directory), cd (change directory), cd / (move up to root directory), I can manoeuver to /var/tmp/kdecache-gerard and /tmp/kde-gerard directories... but then, how do I login as root and remove /var/tmp/kdecache-gerard and /tmp/kde-gerard ?

I understand how to use the rm command.

I really appreciate what your assistance here.

in konsole
sudo rm -r /var/tmp/kdecache-gerard /tmp/kde-gerard

the "rm -r" will recursively remove the folder specified and everything within it so be careful

have you been running apps using the sudo command?

Done.

After reopening Konqueror 4.7, the bookmarks toolbar is still not visible or it is empty.

No. Not that I know of. I do not even know how to run applications using the sudo command to begin with.
