Help with my sources.list? [Solved]

Fri Nov 04, 2011 1:57 am
I don't know if this is KDE 4.7-specific or Kubuntu 11.10-specific, but I found I could not take the tick out of the box for Recommended Updates. After I've installed all my regular programs and done the initial Updates I'd prefer to have only Security Updates.

I did edit /etc/apt/sources.list, leaving only the lines that mention Security without hashes but I'm sure I've been a bit clumsy about this as I then had to add a couple of ticks in Software Sources as everything was unchecked.

What should my sources.list look like for receiving just Security Updates, and is it odd or normal that I couldn't un-tick the Recommended Updates box?

Thanks.

I'm not using Ubuntu anymore, so I'm not an expert, but according to http://repogen.simplylinux.ch your sources list would look like this for security updates + recommended updates:

Code: Select all
#############################################################
################### OFFICIAL UBUNTU REPOS ###################
#############################################################

###### Ubuntu Main Repos
deb http://uk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric main restricted universe multiverse

###### Ubuntu Update Repos
deb http://uk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://uk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric-updates main restricted universe multiverse

and like this for only security updates:

Code: Select all
#############################################################
################### OFFICIAL UBUNTU REPOS ###################
#############################################################

###### Ubuntu Main Repos
deb http://uk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric main restricted universe multiverse

###### Ubuntu Update Repos
deb http://uk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric-security main restricted universe multiverse

However, note that Ubuntu defines the 'Recommended Updates' as "Updates for serious bugs in Ubuntu packaging that do not affect the security of the system". So that probably also includes fixes for bugs which might cause data-loss or similar unpleasant things, as long as they're not related to security.
In other words, you should never disable it unless you have a very good reason to do so...

Btw, package management is distribution-specific, so you might get more responses asking such questions on the Ubuntu forums.

thanks for that. Yes, I do use Ubuntu and mint forums normally but there's a lot less response for KDE stuff, and I was familiar enough with the procedure for Gnome which didn't seem to translate to KDE. At this stage I'm not KDE-familiar enough to be too sure about what's distro-specific.

Thanks for the info and effort.

There is also a dedicated Kubuntu forum, although I don't know how active it is:
