Hey everybody!

So ownCloud (http://owncloud.org), the KDE open-source cloud storage solution, seem to be progressing steadily, and I'd like to start using it - but I don't have any server of my own, and I couldn't find a single shared hosting service suitable for running ownCloud.

Does anybody know about such a service?

While looking around on the web, I basically found two different types of affordable hosting services:

  1. pure file hosting
These either come with their own, proprietary file syncing software and web interface that you can't opt out of, or they only give you a plain ftp/ssh/rsync storage account and no possibility of using a web interface at all.
  2. pure web hosting
There are many of these around, even cheap ones that provide generous storage and bandwidth quotas and ssh access etc.
But, every single one of them I've looked at so far only allows using their web space for running a website - using it for personal file storage/backups/etc. is expressly forbidden.

So, running ownCloud isn't possible with any of them...

If anybody knows of affordable hosting services that don't follow these rigid restrictions, please share your knowledge...

Its not a "hosting service", but you can rent a vserver.

Of course this means you own a server and are responsible for updates, security and backup. Also configuration might be slightly more difficult. Vserver with 20-30 gb are readily available between 5 to 10 Euro per month.
