Hi,
i just installed Debian with KDE on new laptop and got this problem - I need to change HW Addres (MAC) for my card. I go to System Settings -> Network Connection nad edit a Wire Connection 1. But it does not save any changes. On old laptop when I did any change to that section a window asking for root password showed up, but in here there is no such action nad changes are not saved. I can not also delete a connection or do anything that requires a root (well, I can, but changes are not saved). KDE is 4.6.5 and on the same version on old laptop it is working and on the new one not. So I am guessing I am missing something, but what? TIA for any help. kab |

I need to know which Plasma NM version you are using. The KDE SC version (4.6.5) is not relevant most of the time since Plasma NM is not included in KDE SC.
If you are using NetworkManager 0.8 I suggest you to upgrade to NM 0.9 and use one of the released Plasma NM versions (0.8.80 up to 0.8.98). You can see the version by clicking on "Manage Connections" button then "on Other" tab. If there is not version there then you are using a very old version of Plasma NM and should upgrade to a newer version. Anyway, your problem looks more like a problem in PolicyKit configuration. If PolicyKit is not correctly configured NetworkManager will not save the configuration.

Plasma NM is 0.9.0_rc3 (nm09 20111126)
It is the same package that I have on laptop that is standing on the same desk that the new one and it is working just fine there. |

What does the command below return?
kde4-config --path libexec --locate polkit-kde-authentication-agent-1 if it returns nothing then you do not have the authenticaton agent installed.

Well, it is the package manager (in your case apt-get) responsability to install the dependencies and the distribution maintainers (in your case Debian) to add the correct dependencies to the package, this is not KDE's fault. You should contact Debian maintainers and ask them to check if the dependencies for the Plasma NM package are correct. The PolicyKit agent is used in other parts of KDE programs/libraries, for exemple when changing the clock and timezone settings. It must be always installed.
