Hey folks,

I am having some difficulty connecting wirelessly through my homehub 3 router from BT. If I connect my netbook with a cable it works flawlessly and if I boot into windows it works wirelessly too but it wont work in Kubuntu wirelessly.

It goes through the motions and finds the network and connects to it but when I try to load a website it takes forever at 'looking up bbc.co.uk' or whatever then eventually arrives at an error screen. I thought it might be a DNS issue so tried playing around changing the DHCP setting to addresses only then adding google DNS servers but it made no differece (in all honesty I wasnt 100% sure what I was doing but just giving it a try).

My netbook connects to other wireless networks ok in kubuntu. Just cant work out whats going wrong here.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks

In Windows, try checking the output of "ipconfig /all" and compare the value of the "DNS Servers" against what will be present in /etc/resolv.conf after NetworkManager has connected you to your network.

It could be that Kubuntu is picking up the wrong preferences via DHCP somehow.

If you need to hardcode a different DNS server, this can be done by opening Network Management > Manage Connections > (Select Connection) > IPv4 Address, and selecting "Automatic (DHCP) addresses only".

Another thing might be to try Google's Public DNS - which has an IP address of 8.8.8.8.

Alternately, it could be setting an incorrect default route (you will need to go full static to hardcode that however, unfortunately - but it should also be visible from the Windows output).

If none of the above fixes the issue, could you try opening a Konsole, and type "ping kde.org" and see if that yields a response?

If it does, your system could be affected by a bug similar to what affected Fritz! boxes. However, switching to Google Public DNS should workaround that as far as I know...
