Increase Kopete Notification Timeout?

Tue Feb 28, 2012 12:22 am
Hey guys. I'm not sure if this was intended behavior or not, but my popup notifications for Kopete only last for about one second before disappearing, which renders them basically useless as I can't read their contents before they vanish. Other applications have a good 5 second timeout for their notifications. Is there any way I can increase the timeout for Kopete's notifications?

Thanks.

Kopete's notifications last for ~5 seconds (or possibly more) here interestingly. What version of KDE are you using?

Also, can you reproduce this under a new user?

Yeah, it's reproducible on new users. Maybe it's a Kubuntu thing. I have the same issue on both my laptop and my desktop, both running Kubuntu 11.10, KDE version 4.8.0. I also can't open Kopete's preferences without it crashing, 100% reproducible. I'm not sure if that may be related to this, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.

Let's try to fix the nasty crash first, it could be related (although it is unlikely)

Okay, here's the backtrace. I tried to install debugging symbols, but it errors out ("Could not find debug symbol packages for this application."). This happens every time I go to Settings → Configure.

This crash appears to be in libjpeg. Please ensure all packages are up to date, then file a bug with your distribution. If you have a Webcam connected to your system, please try disconnecting it and trying to reproduce the bug.

From what I can tell, it seems that the images generated by your Webcam have revealed a bug in libjpeg - either because they are subtly corrupt - or because libjpeg has some issues with it's code / implementation of the JPEG specification.

Awesome, disconnecting my webcam worked. I can now access Kopete's preferences without crashing. Thanks for the help on that.

Unfortunately, though, my notifications are still only displaying for one second before disappearing. Any ideas on where to go from here?

Can you reproduce the lack of notification time under a new user?

Yes, it occurs on new accounts as well. I did just realize something, though. Notifications only last for one second if I have "open messages instantly" set in settings → behavior. If I set it to "use message queue", I get the full-length notification time. I do prefer the open instantly option, though.

Interestingly, with the notification library of the awesome window manager (don't remember its name) kopete notifications also disappear immediately (they just flicker for a split-second). Notifications from all other applications work just fine. Maybe that's related?

Edit: Yes, it seems so: When I tick "enable message queue", the messages stay for a longer time. They just have an ugly <qt> tag around them now ;p

I'm working on the KDevelop IDE.

The <qt> tag is a Qt specific HTML tag, used to encase notifications.
As for why using the Message Queue is different to showing them instantly - it is probably an application bug - I suspect the newly created "instant" message is deleted very soon instead of being held for deletion later (ie. it is a bug in the code)
