It used to work through both very successfully but since I began to mess with KMIX now audio doesn't come through my laptop speakers. They do play through my headphones however. Also pressing the Volume up and down keys has no effect on the volume even though the volume bar goes up and down. Only adjusting the Internal Audio Analog Stereo volume through the KMIX window adjusts the volume. Also KMIX opens automatically every kubuntu session instead of automatically hiding itself. Does anyone know how to resolve these issues?

I just straight up don't have audio through headphones or speakers now. i suppose if someone knew how to reset kmix i'd be set.

Can you verify that the needed output devices are not muted?

They weren't muted. I ended up just backing up .kde and having kubuntu start over. It worked fortunately.
