Hi Guys,
I am having trouble playing internet streams ".pls" links on amarok. Running OpenSUSE 12.1. I had amarok 2.4 read about similar issues, so i upgraded to 2.6, changed the phonon backend to VLC, still not working. It just stays displaying info about the stream, but no playing or sound. I know my firewall is not the issue, since it connects to port 80, which i use for web browsing, and the reply port whatever it is, is open since i tracked iptables dropped packets and none found. Any tips are appreciated. Thanks |

have you tried playing these streams with other players?
try closing Amarok and restarting in Konsole with the --debug option, try and play a stream then look for a line started with "amarok: [Playlist::Model] Metadata updated for track "Stream " and see if there's any error messages following it Amarok streams .pls streams fine for me using VLC backend, but not all streams I tried worked. Example no player I tested played http://media.on.net/radio/127.pls even though they listed the name of the station, gave "error unable to open the MRL 'http://radio1.internode.on.net:8000/127'. Check the log for details." |

I can confirm that some .pls streams don't work.
I tried to listen to h4xed radio stream with different backends, different distros and different media players. So far only Clementine could play it. Totem, Rythmbox, Banshee and Amarok all failed. |

I tried all 3 formats for http://radio.h4xed.us/radio/tunein amd none played in Amarok and sMplayer though 2 of them did play in VLC

Folks, could you please be precise when you report that a stream is not playing, especially in regard of the exact Amarok, KDE and Phonon backend version? Just "it doesn't play"is not enough.

FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ... |

I tried as well and have the same problem, none of the streams plays, Amarok 2.6-git build of a few minutes ago, KDE 4.9.0, vlc backend 0.6.0. Please file a bug on https://bugs.kde.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=amarok, component "Playback/Streams"

I can't play internetradio stream, too. Here is what amarok --debug says with a stream that works fine in VLC: http://paste.opensuse.org/view/simple/21059836 There is no error shown, the buttons just do nothing.
This happens on openSUSE 12.3 with KDE 4.10.2 "release 553" on Amarok Version 2.7.0 with GStreamer 4.6.3 Phonon backend using gstreamer 1.0.5 and fluendo-mp3 plugin 18 (regular MP3 works just fine) libQtStreamer is 0.10.2. |

the phonon-vlc backend works for me so I would guess not an Amarok but a backend issue |

Yes, that is "yet another phonon-backend-gstreamer bug".
The dilemma is that distributions can not ship the vlc backend for patent reasons (blame the mp3 patent and other proprietary formats), so they all ship the gstreamer one, despite it's problems and shortcomings. This will get worse when distributions ship gstreamer 0.10.x and 1.x plugins and user mix those, which will add another layer of confusion to the backend, as the plugins need to have all the same version. For the n-th time: we are sorry for that, but there is really nothing we can do from the Amarok side, we depend on that stuff like other KDE applications do and the patent-plugin-mess doesn't make it easier. I will push this once more to the "Graphics+Multimedia" section, as it is in no way Amarok specific.

I suggest to add this to the FAQ then. For openSUSE you can get phonon-backend-vlc from the official OBS and an uncrippled VLC client/library from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/#download
