Hi I'm new to linux open suse and kde and having a problem with the sound. I don't really get how to configure the sound properly. When I open KMix there aren't any sound devices shown. So I open the soundconfiguration.
the first device is my usb headset, for which no linux driver exists. When I try it out there in the configuration it works but it doesn't work everywhere else and it doesn't show up in kmix. Isn't the first device in that list the default device for all applications or how does that work? |

try enabling pulseaudio: yast -> hardware -> sound -> other -> pulseaudio configure -> enable -> ok
then restart the pc |

Does sound work if you _disable_ pulseaudio? Maybe you have to add your user to the "audio" group. (shouldn't be necessary normally, but well) You can either do that in YaST->"User and Group Management", or by typing:

It works by disabling pulseaudio for my headset now thanks. But I also have an tv connected over hdmi. I'm having GF110 Hight Definition Audio Controller Digital Stereo (HDMI) as an Audio Device in Phonon but it doesn't work by putting that on the top.

there's something amiss in you setup - there should be 3 tabs in " audio and video settings" not just 2 as in your pic
in the backend tab what phonon backend is being used ? I don't have any good ideas but I would re-install the all the phonon and pulse audio packages reboot and see if that helps, if not I'd create a new user and see if it worked and if all 3 tabs show if yours still doesn't (just to see if the system is fine but your config is bad) these are the phonon and pulseaudi packages I have installed (and I don't know if they are all required but I have them and I have sound) to do the re-install easily: open yast -> software manager, search for pulse then right click in the results list -> all in the list -> update unconditionally and then the same for phonon

The "Audio Hardware Setup" tab is only shown if pulseaudio is used. So this would imply that pulseaudio wasn't working at all, which would explain of course why there was no sound... Could you try to enable it again in YaST? Does it work now, and does the "Audio Hardware Setup" tab appear? |

After re-enabling Pulseaudio I would suggest a full logout and login cycle to ensure there are no propagation issues related to the configuration change.

Yeah I'm having three tabs now and pulse enabled, but now there's an constant echo and the tv still won't work.

try:
- as a different user to see if they too experience the echo - if there's a mic connected, does disconnecting it remove the echo |
